Carena Expands Staff to Help Meet Increased Demand for In-Home or At-Work Urgent Care

09/24/2007

SEATTLE -- Carena, Inc., which has reinvented the traditional medical house call as an employee benefit, today announced the appointments of Belinda Fu, MD, Benjamin Green, MD, and S. Iyabo Tinubu-Karch, MD, to its team of physicians in the Seattle region. The physicians will help Carena meet the growing demand for its services in which physicians treat urgent care needs in the home or workplace.

These new physicians will support Carena’s two employer-based care programs aimed at increasing the quality of care and education as well as overall health of employees and their dependents. Both services are based on the same basic principle — that immediate treatment and education for illnesses and injuries result in better outcomes. All too often people have to wait hours or days to see their primary care physician or a doctor in the emergency room (ER). This costs the employee time, and costs the employer high ER fees and lost employee productivity.

Carena’s new physicians have a diverse background but all share a commitment to quality and evidence-based care.

Dr. Belinda Fu completed her undergraduate studies at StanfordUniversity and attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. Following her medical studies, Fu returned to StanfordUniversity, where she taught undergraduate biology and medical pharmacology. After moving to Seattle, Fu completed her residency training in Family Medicine at the University of Washington. In addition, Fu spent a year as chief resident and a faculty development fellow at UW, where she continues to teach residents and medical students as a clinical instructor.

Dr. Benjamin Green received his undergraduate degree from HarvardUniversity and completed his medical training at RobertWoodJohnsonMedicalSchool. Interested in practicing family medicine, Green entered into the University of Pennsylvania Family Medicine Residency Program, where also he pursued his interests in sports medicine and adolescent health.

Dr. Iyabo Tinubu-Karch has practiced medicine in the Pacific Northwest for more than 11 years. After receiving her undergraduate degree from WarnboroughCollege, Oxford, England, Tinubu-Karch attended medical school at St. Georges University School of Medicine, Grenada, and completed her residency in internal medicine at LenoxHillHospital in New York City. Tinubu-Karch then started and operated her own medical practice and has also worked at other hospitals and clinics in the Seattle area. She is an active staff member at SwedishHospital, GoodSamaritanHospital, SnoqualmieValleyHospital and AuburnRegionalMedicalCenter and is currently pursuing training at the University of Washington’s Medical Management Program.

“These three talented and passionate physicians are a welcome addition to the team,” said Ralph Derrickson, Carena’s CEO. “They share our commitment to evidence-based, quality care and will help us meet the increased demand for our urgent care service.”

Carena has two employer-based care models: Carena Urgent Care and Carena Workplace Care. With Carena Urgent Care, board-certified physicians treat employees and family members with urgent health care needs at their home. This eliminates unnecessary trips to the hospital emergency room, which are a leading driver of high employer health care costs. A Carena visit also provides unmatched access to high-quality physician care and health information, enabling individuals to more effectively manage their health. The result is increased employee productivity, better health, and lower overall health care costs for employers.

The Carena Workplace Care service provides physicians who deliver prompt, on-location medical care to employees who’ve been injured on the job. Carena Workplace Care has been shown to close claims more quickly and at a lower cost than other workplace injury care options. Both options allow businesses to address the pressing issues of employee care while reducing cost, increasing access, and delivering accountability.
