Joint Commission Accreditation
04/27/2009
PART ONE-of-THREE Michael Kulczycki, MBA, is executive director of the Ambulatory Care Accreditation program at the Joint Commission. In the first of a three-part series, Kulczycki offers general information about the program. Every time we’re out in the field, people come by and say, “Well we didn’t know Joint Commission was accrediting ‘X environment,’” whether it’s urgent care or [ambulatory surgery centers] or imaging, but we’ve been active in that environment since 1975. The Joint Commission is not only about hospitals; it accredits seven other kinds of facilities. Hospitals make up less than one-third of the total amount of organizations that are accredited by the Joint Commission. The other misconception is that, “You don’t understand our (urgent care) field.” What I would remind folks of is that, first off, we’ve had input from the Urgent Care Association of America [UCAOA] on what’s called our Ambulatory Professional and Technical Advisory Committee. That’s an official board committee that gives us input on standards development and changes to existing standards. We’ve had that input since early 2008.
