The Importance of Staff Feedback in a Medical Office

By Dr. Rhonda Savage
06/16/2009

What do your employees want? More feedback! One of the frustrations of employees in every industry, particularly the medical industry, is a lack of feedback from supervisors.

Employees are just one side of the coin, however. In a busy medical office, your colleagues and co-workers also have needs. So what do they want? Chances are, your team members want to work in harmony with you and know they are in good standing. You do not need to be friends with everyone you work with, but you do need to be friendly and professional. Unresolved past issues or frustrations can build and erupt down the line!

So how can you keep your employees and your colleagues happy? With the right kind of feedback, you can give your team the kind of advice and commentary employees not only want but deserve.

Don’t let your frustrations build. Many people allow their feelings to build, resulting in past frustrations spilling out into today’s problems. Everyone knows when someone is upset. Employees want to know up front what is wrong.

Unfortunately, you can be a great person and leader 90 percent of the time, but if you explode into anger or give someone the silent treatment, he or she will mostly remember the 10 percent of the time that you behaved inappropriately. When you become upset, first collect your thoughts. What do you really want from the situation? Focus on your heart: what are your motives? Do you want to prove the person wrong? Or affect a change that will have a positive result?
