Former Military Men Open Urgent Care Center

05/09/2008

From one desert, to another, to another.

A surgeon and a physician assistant who treated injured soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq now own and operate an urgent care center in Tucson, Ariz.

David Orringer, MD, a surgeon, and Davidson Hall, a physician assistant, recently opened Velo Med Urgent Care, a 4,400 square-foot space, according to Inside Tucson Business.

The center has 16 employees, five exam rooms, an X-ray suite, a lab, a limited pharmacy and a room for minor surgical procedures.

Orringer is a trained pianist and opera singer and says he never considered urgent care until after he worked in the military.

"A lot of what you get in the field is bare bones operations," he told Inside Tucson Business. "You’re treating people with few resources and so you have to be prepared to see anything and everything — and you have so many guys depending on you. So urgent care is the same except in a little more of a controlled environment, with better equipment and better resources and a fully trained staff."

Orringer and Hall met when they practiced at another immediate care facility in Tucson. The men recognized a shortage of primary care physicians and emergency rooms in the Tucson area, and thought their clinic could be a good solution.

Hall was a combat medic in Iraq during Desert Storm and served with the 82nd Airborne and as a Special Forces medic.

Orringer served as medical director for the Air Force in Iraq and Afghanistan for four months in each country.
